Explain your choice too! Let's discuss the merits of both these films.

I personally never saw either one entirely. I had an ex who adored the original and she tried to get me to watch it. But the portions I saw, I was bored. But I know back then, it was a movie in its own element. I did enjoy Dawn of the Dead (2004) and I felt it had a compelling storyline and elements of suspense, humor and horror. But, I'm not an avid zombie fan, aside from the Resident Evil franchise.

oh you've missed out, @Foxfire . The original film is truly ground breaking in that it showcases a black man as the primary protagonist & in that era, that sort of thing was unheard of. & again, this film is the granddaddy of the zombie horror genre, even the resident evil films (which i like too) feature numerous references to the original 'Dead' film.

The 1990 remake is unusual b/c 1) it reuinted most of the original team that made the original. 2) it featured the direction & special effects of splatter king Tom Savini 3) some of the actors from the original film had small cameos in the remake. But the BIGGEST positive about the remake was the total overhaul of Barbara the lead female. IN the original she spent most of her time screaming & was in a catatonic state, but in this one, while she has her moment of weakness, she rises up to become a powerful woman in the film, standing shoulder to shoulder w/ the male protagonist.

Dawn of the Dead is remake of the original, which itself is a Romero film & the original is a loose sequel to Night of the living dead. The 2004 version of Dawn is ok...but I prefer the original from 1978 b/c the themes & subtle criticism of consumerism that Romero was trying to promote in his film were appearent. Tom Savini also did the special make up effects for the Dawn of the dead original & remake & played a few zombies in the films as well.
