Why Hasn't 'Wonder Woman' Returned To The Screen?

I know a movie of some sorts has been in the works for years, but NOBODY has been able to get it right...

Do you think that speaks to the idea that the people behind writing the pilots or spec scripts REALIZE how big of a task this is, or is it just laziness...

With all the movies about Superheroes coming out, there has YET to be a female centered one, and you have to start wondering WHY that is..

True, Wonder Woman has BIG ORIGINS that are hard to canonize into a film that all at once explains her backstory and then brings her into something as modern as today?

She's all at once empowering to women and yet sexualized in a way...

Do you think we will EVER see a Wonder Woman movie and WILL IT BE GOOD?

lol I literally had this open in my browser all morning to come here and post this lol
Wonder Woman is tough for a LOT of reasons. All female comic movies are.

First of all, there has not been a really good one yet. And until there is one, people will paint the entire concept with a broad negative brush. It is fair to ask that if Sharon Stone and Halle Berry cannot carry a comic movie (and an iconic one in Catwoman no less) then who CAN carry a movie of that type with a female lead?

Next, I would argue that Marvel is more ready than DC to do such a thing. They seem to have a better feel for their characters and they have at least some experience doing female characters well.

Finally, people THINK they want a Wonder Woman movie but in reality they want a clone of Lynda Carter to walk through that door and BE Wonder Woman. Truth is, there is almost no one available with the acting chops and the look that people will accept. I actually think that it will take someone willing to make one that people will hate to get the ball rolling. Sorta like how the Avengers could not be if not for Marvel being willing to be involved in more than a few losing efforts before X-Men and the Blade Trilogy started to turn the tide. How many bad DC movies (specifically WW) are fans willing to stomach and can DC absorb that and keep coming?

Agreed, but when it comes to the disaster that was Catwoman, they took an iconic character, used the name and likeness and created something completely unrelated, even Halle Berry admits that she basically did Catwoman because of the paycheck.

I also think that the Superman and Batman films have had an easier time because we are so used to the changing faces and the sheer volume of films makes it easier for people to into new incarnations of the films with an open mind.

People DO want Lynda Carter for sure, and I fear that no matter what somebody ends up doing, it will be negatively received. I agree that somebody just HAS to do it first but now with The Avengers and The DC Universe so much in the spotlight, the margin for error is so little. She would basically have to be perfectly crafted and dropped into the Universe, ready to go. Maybe if she comes in as a supporting character in the next crossover FIRST and then they do like an origins film. That might work.

That might be the only shot to do it but the risk is that she comes off shallow and gratuitous rather than fully fleshed out. What might be good is if the story revolved around her in a new re-imagined origin story that pulls established characters together.

But Wonder Woman cannot be dropped in IMO. Will not work IMO and beneath the character.

One other thing I thought of...there is a palpable fear of what feminists will do to this movie. I can smell the fear out there. Every part of that movie will be a nightmare to navigate from actress selection to plot to wardrobe to whether the villain can even be a man and, if so, can he hit her or touch her or leer at her or...the more I think about it the easier it is to see why it has not been done.

Agreed!

I want to see a Wonder Woman movie, but admittedly I would be a harsh critic from the get-go, just like many others. For me to enjoy a WW movie I think it is more reliant on the script being top class than the actress being so. I'm certain there are actresses out there who could carry the movie (especially if she's not picked after how famous she is) as long as they put the heavy weight names in supporting roles.

I think that in any Comic movie it is easy to walk the line between good and cheesy, one wrong step and they fall over the line into campy/silly territory, which is why - to me - the script is so essential. And of course the director. I don't think it would be hard really, not if they wrote her as a person not focusing on the WOMAN part (women are people too you know ;)) and if they de-emphasized the scanty-clad/sexy thing because it is usually what makes things silly and obnoxious. (which to me means that they can scrap the original WW outfit because it just wouldn't work)

I almost think they would need to do like a Donna Troy movie instead to make it work. Be able to take the focus off it being an icon and tell the story.

Also, I think one of the problems is that all of Wonder Woman's accessories have the ability to REALLY be poorly represented as they ARE kind of cheesy..

I think it would make sense to more of an Origin Movie.. Who wouldn't love to see an epic Amazon type battle, and then end it with thrusting her into the current day and being greeted by Samuel L. Jackson like "We've got something for you to do.."

Remind me to tell the story of Jill asking me what I thought of this new character on Charmed-Boards MORNINGSTAR and her feminum bracelets...

The problem with what you describe is that there is also a line where it is not Wonder Woman at all.

The original costume is iconic. The leaked change to it for the TV pilot killed it by itself? And if you de-emphasize her sex appeal...how long before it makes no sense at all? A tall, gorgeous woman who can bench press a Freightliner and who comes from a society not know for lots of clothing is going to draw attention, and rightfully so.

And what does it mean to focus on the person and not as a woman? I have no idea what that would mean and the perils entailed in trying to navigate that illustrates my point. The two of us are fans and want a movie and are not drooling knuckle-draggers and WE cannot agree lol.

As to who it should be...she is actually out there and I forgot her for a second. Gina Carano.

And Donna Troy might be the way to do it. Good thinking...the risk is that you lose a lot of the regular person draw to the movie and this is an industry that thinks that investing 100 mil into Ang Lee's HULK and ONLY making 250 million back is a failure.

For @ least 3 generations now, Lynda Carter IS Wonder Woman personified. How do you follow up an act like that? The ONLY way to have a shot is to find a NO-NAME who's looks are as close to Lynda's. She's got to have the height, the figure, the overall presentation. & It's been said many times before...ANY WW movie that gets off the ground, if the writers & producers are SMART, they'll cast Lynda Carter as Hypolytta. That's a no-brainer. Cameo/Homage/Reference all in one-shot.

They (the studios) keep thinking attaching a "big name" to the project is going to make it work...but the person who is cast has GOT to understand the character & be able to not take herself too seriously while delivering a mix of elegance, innocence (& yet savvy/worldly in other ways) & no-nonsense. all the things that WW has stood for in most every incarnation in the comic book.

Finally...WW CAN'T be patterned after any OTHER established or "successfull" big screen super heroine. The FIRST movie HAS to adhere to the comic &/or reference the TV show (which itself had a direct impacat on the comic from the late 70s thru the 90s) in someways.

The latest FAILED TV pilote of WW saw her being a female equavilant of TONY STARK (Iron Man)!? <<FAMILY FEUD BUZZER!>> too much. WAY too much & not REMOTELY what WW is about.

The man who created the WW character ALSO created the lie detector machine, hence the "lasso of truth" (btw, Donna Troy has a lasso as well, the lasso of persuasion). WW's bracelets & lasso can easily be translated to a big screen movie & work. they worked well enough on the TV show & have worked in the comics. It WOULD be better for them to scrap the invisible jet (a.k.a DOME) & let WW FLY unaided like she's been doing in the comics for 30+ years.

Well I think if you still call it Wonder Woman I think you can keep the regular person interested especially if you target parents with kids. I feel like you risk pissing off the fans more because they will be like, "Donna Troy is NOT Wonder Woman!!!"

But frame it like a reboot.

If you pick a Lynda Carter clone you will get killed by feminists. A skinny, leggy, large-breasted brunette will not get off the ground. We are not in that time IMO. That is why I went with Carano. Pretty brunette who is fit yet a more athletic fit rather than so model-thin.

Carter as Hippolyta works though.

even though *I* wouldnt like it, I must say that since Donna Troy IS WW's sister, & not too many years ago, she DID officially take on the WW mantel when Diana went back into espionage & revived the Diana Prince persona- this is a creative idea. But it was a short lived stint.

Then, consider "new 52"...Donna Troy is no where to be found. Would the "target audience" even know who SHE is?

But we all know they don't make the movies for the comic audience. Unfortunately lol

Why? Feminists LOVED LC as WW & often applaud WW (the tv show) & there an indepth retrospective /documentary on the season 1 DVD where Lynda Carter, along w/ noted feminist Gloria Stienem, & others speak about how WW broke ground, showing women & girls everywhere that WOMEN could be super heroes too...even women w/ long legs, hips & large breasts :p

That was then. Now, we live in a time where a happily married man who co-wrote a playful song with his own wife about a woman who had a man but was coming on to him and was therefore blurring the lines got KILLED.

It is a much more cloistered time than in the 80s. I would absolutely guarantee that a woman as thin, busty and leggy as Carter would get smashed as another unrealistic body type for women to live up to.

no you did NOT compare Robin Thicke's misogynistic fuckery fest (Blurred Lines) to WW & Lynda Carter!? :haha: oh honey...you have feminism confused with misogyny for sure!

Have you actually read the lyrics or are you simply repeating what you have heard?

I have actually read them and I do not see the misogyny at ALL. Frankly, if THAT is what passes for over-the-top sexist song lyrics then you are proving my point nicely.

A country that can take aim at Blurred Lines will never accept a Lynda Carter-era WW.
