I Hate Cops!
Tennessee is BULLSHIT. I may live here but im not FROM HERE. i'm from DETROIT and will ALWAYS claim that.
Last night I ran out of the house QUICKLY to drive up to the Wal-mart MARKET (a wal mart thats excusively a grocery store and pharmacy- had never seen these UNTIL i moved down here) to get a few necessities i needed. it was night time and the store was about a 5 minute drive from home. So i went in, got my things left out, drove home....a cop pulls me over not even 15 feet from my house. im RIGHT THERE on the Circle drive and he pulls me over and im trying to figure out WHAT FOR. i had my sealtelt on, wasnt speeding, didnt run stop signs (though i typically will late at night in my neigborhood LOL) ....so naturally i got an attitude.
He comes to the car and i asked him why was i stopped and he informs me that my left rear tail light is out. I had no idea of it actually. he asks me where i'm going and i resist the urge to get smart and simply say "My house. its right there" and i point. its LITERALLY a few seconds away. He asks for my license, registration and proof of insurance. i hand him my license from my purse and i suddenly realize i left my vehicle documents envelope in the HOUSE.
now back in detroit, since i worked downtown...ALOT of people would routinely take their "vehicle documents" in and out the car with them because auto theft IS admittedly HIGH in detroit city and if your car is stolen, someone could simply say "they let me borrow" it and would you believe that in some instances that WORKED!? well anyway in detroit alot of folk will keep their insurance/registration documents with them and so its a habit that i have.
I explained to him that i simply forgot to grab my envelope that i keep these things in but that my house was RIGHT THERE and i would be glad to go and get them to show to him. He proably heard that before and was not really looking interested. Im sorry but im NOT about to flirt with some old arrogant cop. it just doesnt work for me.
So this bastard writes me up for not having insurance. as h e prepares to leave, i stop him by calling after him and saying: "EXCUSE ME, isnt there a provision for me to take my insurance to the traffic division and have this tickent waived?" (thats common place in most states). he obviously didnt expect me to know that so he turned around while exhaling and explained the procedure.
TODAY i go to take care of this ticket. but what THIS IDIOT OFFICER didnt tell me was that thanks to the tennessee legislature...a new law was passed so even though the traffic division will dismiss the ticket, this new "law" that has passed MANDATES a $12.00 "dismissal fee" AND a 'one time' $42.00 "administrative fee"...
i looked at the woman like she had lost her mind and said "do you mean to tell me, that even tough this ticket is being dismissed, i STILL have to pay?? thats RIDICULOUS ive worked for th e government for YEARS and i've NEVER heard of this before." (in michigan)
she proceeded to get smart with me telling me "well if you had realized that tennessee law states you must be able to produce insurance anytime you are asked..." and i cut her off saying "hold up miss girl, I'm NEW to this dustbowl of a state and so therefore I dont HAVE to REALIZE anything. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. people try to do the right thing and you STILL want to screw them coming and going. you have a real good racket."
she said "well you still have to pay..." and i said "what i HAVE to do is speak to your supervisor because i dont care for your attitude." and so when she tried to snub me, i flashed my gov't badge and said "dont try to do me like you do the public. i KNOW how to get ahold of the higher ups back there."
the little twit could see that i wasnt about to be dismissed by HER so i spoke with her supervisor who explained to me what was going on and why and i expressed my displeasure to HER in a calm but clear manner. when it was said and done, SHE exercised her authority to waive the 12.00 fee because THAT was something that particular division had imposed but she COULDNT waive the $42.00 fee. only a JUDGE would do that and she told me that they NEVER do it down here.
clearly its another way for the state to make money off the public...and even though I work for the gov't i CLEARLY am reminded why people HATE dealing with the state/fed gov't agencies.
I made an honest mistake and that cop OBVIOUSLY had nothing better to do and was trying to make his quota so even though i had my papers and was able to proove so, i still had to pay and PERSONALLY i didnt appreciate it.
