Women are by and large treated like sex objects. We know the women in porn aren't actually lesbians and with things such as "Girls Gone Wild" and other crimes against women, we don't really believe in bisexuality as a society in general. When it's two women, we say that they are either a) performing such acts until the men get there or b) engaging in such acts to get attention from men. It's not true but that's what most of society believes and what we are led to believe by the adult industry. Because of this, we rationalize that women CAN be bisexual, but that the overall goal is to please men. Women also had a sexual revolution. There was a time when they were told to explore, to burn their bras and to get to know their bodies, which we needed and I understand the concept behind, but men did not get this opportunity. One can say that men didn't need it because the whole female empowerment movement was not about sex but about equality, and on one hand that's true...but it did give women a more accepted chance to explore their bodies in every aspect. I mean they got shit for it and still do get shit for it, but it happened and it was good. Men's sex roles haven't changed for quite some time, and in fact, the concept of manhood is not one that has really evolved in the last even fifty years. Men are taught to not listen to their bodies, or their emotions and that they have to at all times be this construct for masculinity. Now, don't get me wrong, men have it DAMN good in this country and globally, but in terms of knowing and being able to explore their sexuality, this was never a ship that our society really jumped on, and the ones that did, well...they've been persecuted, burned, dragged from behind cars and left on fence posts to die.
Sometimes, I do personally struggle with the concept of bisexuality and I am a gay man. I don't know whether I need to check my privilege here, but my own personal experience is that EVERYBODY experiences attraction to both sexes on some level, whether consciously or unconsciously. I've personally been attracted to a woman to the point of which I could see myself having sex with her, but I never did because I felt at the end of the day, that yeah I could have sex with a woman, and I might possibly enjoy it with the right woman, it doesn't feel right to me. I mean, I always say date who you want, but there is a large part of gay culture that doesn't accept bisexuality because to them it says that they are gay, but want to be more accepted by mainstream society (which is why a VAST majority of gay people first come out as "bisexual" rather than gay, at least at first.) The gay community has largely used bisexuality as a way to have a label while "in transit" to their true sexuality, so I think a lot of people are conflicted as to whether or not it truly and legitimately exist. I mean I am guilty of this myself, and I know that sounds absurd coming from a gay man...but at the end of the day I know a lot of people who have been Bisexual in my life and it seems to me that while that may be what they say, I often see a clear preference in terms of partners they choose to be with and types of people they date and have sex with. I also feel like part of gay culture doesn't accept bisexuality because it's this in between world that confuses the mainstream society. These people who don't understand say "Well, if they can have sex with both men and women, then everybody can! Why do we even need gay marriage."
It's a polarizing topic for sure, and even I don't really know where I fall in that line, which bothers me because I desperately try and accept all walks of the sexual spectrum. There is just a lot of "power" behind the word "bisexual".
